Latino Scholarship Day, Hens win 5 to 4

July 15, 2007: The 5th Annual Latino Scholarship Day with the Toledo Mud Hens was a tremendous success according to Bob Salazar of the Spanish American Organization and Rico Neller of La Prensa.

It is anticipated that approximately $1,300 was raised for scholarships, to be awarded to Latino students who attend St. Francis de Sales HS, Owens Community College, or Lourdes College.

In field ceremonies, a $500 La Prensa scholarship was awarded to the parents—Ronald and Sandra García—of Joe García, a graduate of St. Francis de Sales HS and member of LASSO. John Orozco is the school coordinator of LASSO.

Co-host SAO and Lourdes College presented $500 matching funds to two students: Oriano Orozco and Savannah Frelin, of $1,000 each.

The SAO also has an endowment with Owens Community College since 2003 with $750 each being awarded to Ashley Guercio and Ashley Smith.

LatinoFest, through committee members Consuelo Hernández, Theresa Ramos, and Fred Gutiérrez, presented $500 with matching funds by Lourdes College to provide for a $1,000 scholarship to Brandi Barrera.

First pitches were thrown by John Orozco (for La Prensa) and Mindy Pfleghaar (for the Spanish American Organization).

Midwest diva Yvonne Ramos sang the national anthem.

Entertainment was provided courtesy of the Toledo Mud Hens and El Camino Real and El Camino Sky Restaurants, with music by Detroit’s mariachi recording artist Salvador Torres and folkloric dance group El Corazón de México.

The BuckeyeCable System entertained the Youth with Dora the Explorer.

The game was sold out, with La Prensa and the SAO selling 600 tickets, with Latins United purchasing 100 tickets. The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Charlotte Knights, 5 to 4, in the 10th inning.
