Sofia Quintero Art & Cultural Center presents Rain Garden demonstration

On Saturday May 19, 2007, beginning at 10:00AM, the Sofia Quintero Art & Cultural Center, with assistance from the City of Toledo Department of Environmental Services, will present the installation of a “Rain Garden” in the South End Community Garden, adjacent to the Center.

A brief description of a rain garden is repositioning your rain gutters to collect storm rain away from the city sewer drainage system and into your yard. According to Joe Balderas, director of the Center, a “rain gutter would be connected to pvc piping which would be placed underneath the ground that would redirect the storm run-off rain into a desired area where plants that require plenty of water would be planted.”

The Center invites residents, organizations and businesses interested in learning about installing simple rain gardens.  Staff from the Department of Environmental Services will be present to answer specific questions about installation including the benefits of a rain garden.  Drinks and snacks will be provided.
