Bobby Sanabria to join Navarrette in CHIP’s conference
World renowned percussionist Bobby Sanabria is part of this year’s 12th Annual Hispanic Leadership Conference, slated for Saturday, April 28, 2007, at the Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio.

Other participants include Alvaro De Cola (federally certified court interpreter), Sylvia M. Sykes, Brenda Aldana, Lorain’s David G. Arredondo, attorney Murray Bilfield, and keynote speaker Rubén Navarrette, Jr.
Navarrette’s keynote address, titled A Clash of Absolutes: The Rights and Wrongs of the Immigration Debate, analyzes the issue of immigration reform. Navarrette will also be moderating a panel discussion with area newspaper publishers, senior editors, television producers, and Latino print and television executives on media coverage of Hispanic Arts & Artists.
Sanabria is a multi-Grammy-nominated recording artist, producer, percussionist, composer, and educator and has performed with a veritable Who’s Who in the world of jazz and Latin music. His diverse recording and performing experience includes work with: Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Paquito D'Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo Santamaría, Chico O'Farrill, Candido, Henry Threadgill, and Mario Bauzá.
The son of Puerto Rican parents, Bobby was born and raised in the “Fort Apache” section of New York City’s South Bronx. Bobby is a leader in the Afro-Cuban and jazz fields as both drummer and percussionist and is recognized as one of the most articulate scholars of la tradición. He has been featured on numerous Grammy-nominated albums, including The Mambo Kings.
His most critically praised work has been with the famed Mario Bauzá and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. With them he recorded three Grammy-nominated CDs, considered to be the definitive works of the Afro-Cuban big-band jazz tradition. Sanabria was featured with the Mario Bauzá orchestra in two PBS documentaries about Bauzá, appeared on the Bill Cosby show with the Bauzá orchestra, and in the PBS documentary on the life of Mongo Santamaria.
The CHIP conference will be held at LCCC’s Spitzer Conference Center and begins at 9:00 a.m. (doors open at 7:30 a.m.) and runs through 4:00pm. This will be followed by an evening Gala sponsored by State Farm Insurance at the Lorain Party Center, from 6:00 p.m. through midnight, featuring cultural presentations, dinner and dancing to the music of the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project.

On Friday, April 27, 2007 a speaker/media/sponsor reception will be held at the Holiday Inn in Elyria from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at which time all guests and the Lorain County community will be invited to the Lorain Palace Theater to view the movie “Innocent Voices,” which depicts the life of children in El Salvador during the civil war in the 1980s when children were inducted into the army at the age of 12. The cost is $70.00 for the conference and evening gala, $35.00 for the conference or gala only, and $15.00 for the dance only. College students can register for half price and 100 high school students will receive full scholarships covering all conference costs through the Nordson Corporation.
