By Claudia Annoni-Monzón, La Prensa

The International Boxing Club, based in Toledo, Ohio, offers a knock-out of a pugilist program. It presents an after-school, competitive program, where the members are required to attend tutoring classes in order to participate in the boxing training. These classes are provided at the club.

“Not all participants want to fight or box, some just come for the training”, Harry Cumming, director of the Club specified. “We want to improve their life skills through discipline and hard work.”

People from all ages can joined the Club, but one of its main focuses is to reach out to diversified youth. It seeks to increase youth awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and help create positive attitudes and self-images through participation in spirited, competitive boxing events.

“Here we all have something in common, the passion for the sport and the kids that come,” said Coach James Merriwatcher, who is a retired fighter and volunteer at the Club.

The Toledo International Boxing Club is a non-profit organization that promotes a healthy, competitive spirit among young people; it is located at 1717 Adams Street and can be reached at 419-244-8955.
