Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Proposes Increase in Immigration Fees

Last Wednesday, Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), a division of the Department of Homeland Security, announced its intention to raise the application fees for citizenship from $330 to $595 and the fee for becoming a legal permanent resident (green card) from $325 to $905.  According to Emilio González, CIS Director, the new fees would reduce average application processing times by the end of September 2009.  Most fees for a variety of immigration services would rise an average of 66 percent.

CIS last raised fees in 2004, at the time claiming that post-September 11^th background checks were more intensive, costing more.

While there will be a public comment period, absent intense congressional pressure or a monetary appropriation by Congress to help pay costs, the proposed increased fees are a certainty.

Los Servicios de Inmigración y Ciudadanía (CIS)  Proponen Incremento a las Tarifas

El miércoles pasado, los Servicios de Inmigración y Ciudadanía(CIS), una división del Departamento de Seguridad del Estado, anunció su intención de incrementar las tarifas de las solicitudes para la ciudadanía de $330 a $595 así como también para las solicitudes de residencia permanente (green card) de $325 a $905. 

De acuerdo con Emilio Gonzalez, Director de CIS, las nuevas tarifas reducirían los tiempos promedios de procesamiento de solicitudes para finales de Septiembre del 2009.  La mayoría de las tarifas para varios de los servicios de inmigración aumentarían en un 66 por ciento.

 La última vez que el CIS aumentó las tarifas fue en el año 2004, después de Septiembre 11th cuando  las investigaciones de los antecedentes eran más intensivas, costando mayor cantidad.

Mientras tanto, habrá un período de comentarios públicos,sin la oposición del Congreso o una asignación monetaria por el Congreso para ayudar a pagar los gastos, los incrementos  propuestos a las tarifas, son una realidad.  

Si usted será afectado por estos incrementos, una acción inmediata le ahorrará una cantidad considerable de dinero.
