WBGU-PBS documentary on Jesse Ponce premieres

The development of Latino music in the
United States can be traced in the music and life story of Toledo resident Jesse Ponce, a master of Conjunto, a roots style of Tejano (Tex-Mex) music. “Playing from the Heart: The Story of Jesse Ponce,” a WBGU-PBS produced documentary, premieres at 10:00 p.m. Friday, May 5.

Lucy Long, popular culture, and Tony Howard, WBGU-PBS, collaborated on the project, which features
Ponce discussing his life and performing his music. When Long met Ponce doing a project on Latino music in Toledo, she was so inspired by him, it sparked her interest to do the documentary.

Although Conjunto is a very traditional style of music and not as commercial as other
styles of Latino music, Ponce has a special way of making his music reach out to people
who have never heard of him or his music. Long believes Ponce’s passion for his music
touches many and his perfectionism enables his audience to feel what he’s feeling on
stage.
