Adelante, Inc, a social agency that provides a variety of services in the Toledo community, hosts its third Chávez Humanitarian Awards. According to its director, Sonia Troche, “Nominations have been received honoring an adult individual who has shown excellence and that person will be recognized on March 31 at the Dana Center of the Medical University of Ohio Campus.”
The Cesar Chavez Humanitarian awards recognize ten outstanding Latino high school students from Northwest Ohio. The purpose of the recognition award is to highlight the youth’s achievements and contributions as upstanding Latinos their community.
Students can be nominated in the areas of academics, community involvement, leadership, and sports. Finalists for the recognition award will be announced on March 31, 2006 Adelante’s annual César Chávez Humanitarian Awards Banquet at the Dana Conference Center located on MUO campus. Also to be honored are students from Northwest Ohio. According to Adelante’s Andreanna Rivera, there are a total of 23 student nominations in the categories of Academics, Leadership, Community Involvement, and Sports. “Students may be nominated for more than one category, by anyone from the community such as teachers, principals, counselors, advisors, coaches, and clergy,” said Rivera.
Criteria for nominees include: application and essay written by the nominator explaining how the student exemplifies such recognition. To be eligible, students must be Latina/o 9-12th grade students from Northwest Ohio High School. Nominated students include:
