Tulipanes Latino Art & Film Fest begins Sept. 1

Holland, MI: The Sixth Annual Tulipanes Latino Art & Film Festival is poised to take the stage on Labor Day Weekend, with a wide range of cultural representation in film, art, and music for the whole family.

"We are proud to present the sixth annual Tulipanes festival, continuing the tradition of highlighting Latinos in the arts," Tony Castillo, president of the Tulipanes Board of Directors, said.

"This is made possible thanks to a wide variety of generous sponsors who have helped make the 2006 festival a reality.  Our schedule features a wonderful range of award-winning films, musicians, and artists, and we invite the greater Holland community to come enjoy the weekend."

Building on the success of last year's centralized locations, Tulipanes 2006 will again feature a main stage in Centennial Park, with other activities happening within blocks at the Knickerbocker Theatre, Park Theatre, Herrick Library, and the Holland Area Arts Council.

The festival runs Friday, September 1 through Sunday, September 3, 2006.

This year's festival brings many films, including Goal! The  Dream Begins, Quinceañera, and Crossing Arizona, which focuses on the human side of undocumented immigration. A panel discussion featuring Crossing Arizona’s director Daniel DeVivo and other cast and crew is scheduled for Saturday, September 2, at 5:00 p.m. in the Park Theatre.

The music and entertainment line-up features past favorites like Los Bandits and Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca, and new appearances including Tierra, an up-and-coming Latin-based Christian band from West Michigan.

On Friday night, a Salsa Night will take place at the Padnos Gallery of the Holland Area Arts Council (HAAC), featuring the sounds of 7-piece salsa band Orquestra Sensacional. An informal lesson will take place at 8 p.m. and the dance will run from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. Artwork by local and national Latino artists will be on display in the gallery, and guests may take the opportunity to glue down a tile in the Tulipanes mosaic, the current HAAC community project, based on the artwork of José Nazero.

A suggested donation of $5 will be collected at the Salsa Night; all other events are free to the public and are for all ages except where noted. The Holland and West Michigan community is invited to celebrate throughout the weekend's family-friendly festivities.

Other activities include a giant piñata full of candy and prizes, an art showcase, and chiarriada horse exhibition. Ethnic food vendors will be present at Centennial Park. A full schedule is available at the website www.tlaff.org and on this page of La Prensa.
