Granholm signs legislation to expand Veterans Memorial Park, Erect Purple Heart Monument

LANSING: Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has signed legislation honoring Michigan veterans and commemorating their contribution through a Lansing-area memorial.  The two bills will increase the size of the Veterans Memorial Park and create a monument in the park honoring Michigan recipients of the Purple Heart Medal.

“The members of
Michigan’s armed forces have provided perhaps the greatest service to our state and our country,” Granholm said.  “It is important that we honor the sacrifices of Michigan’s Purple Heart recipients.”

Veterans Memorial Park was created under the Michigan Vietnam Veterans Memorial Act.  House Bill 5620 increases the size of the park by nearly an acre.
Veterans Memorial Park is located in Lansing near the Supreme Court Hall of Justice, two blocks west of the State Capitol building.

Senate Bill 764 creates the Purple Heart Recognition Act.  The act requires the erection of a Purple Heart monument within the expanded Veterans Memorial Park.  The Purple Heart honors members of the armed forces who are wounded or killed in battle.  Approximately 60,000 recipients of the Purple Heart currently live in Michigan.

House Bill 5620 was sponsored by Representative John Garfield (R-Rochester Hills).  Senate Bill 764 was sponsored by Senator Jason Allen (R-Traverse City).
