Lisa Canales-Flores addresses Toledo City Council appointment issue

Early this year, I approached my family, trusted friends and elected colleagues of our community with the thought of running for the seat of Toledo City Council District 6. As a supporter of outgoing member Wade Kapszukiewicz, I felt confident that my record of two successful terms as a board member of the Washington Local Schools, along with my long-time community involvement in the area and my professional experience in city government, had prepared me to realize my goal to proudly represent the voters of District 6.

Sadly, my decision to seek the post was countered by the appointment being given, by the Democratic leadership, to Mr. Joe Blaze.  Believing in my efforts and years of community service in District 6, I decided to move forward with my campaign.

Nonetheless, my passion for serving in this district went beyond the political decisions involved.  Our campaign goal for Citizens for Lisa Canales-Flores’ was to simply let the voters make their decision on November 8, 2005.  We have not wavered from that decision we made together as a campaign committee.

While I am humbled to be considered as the front-runner to replace Wade Kapszukiewicz, I have decided not to accept such an appointment. This decision has not been an easy one.

As a City of Toledo employee, and a school board member I would be required to leave both positions, and only hold the seat – appointed by City Council – for eight weeks until election day. My first responsibility, particularly as a single mother, is to my family.  By no means is this an easy decision but I believe it is the correct one.

I come to this decision with an open heart to simply serve the citizens of District 6 as a proud Democrat. We will not waver from our decision to let the voters of decide who should represent then November 8, 2005.

It will be my pleasure to earn every vote.

Sincerely,

Lisa Canales-Flores
