Vote for Resolution 738-05, renaming the Buckeye Basin Greenbelt Parkway to: César E. Chávez Greenbelt Parkway—La Prensa Editorial

.
On November 1, 2005, at 4:00PM, Toledo City Council commences its weekly session to conduct city business. Included in its agenda is Resolution 738-05, presented by its president, Louis Escobar. This resolution endeavors to rename the Buckeye Basin Greenbelt Parkway as the “César E. Chávez Greenbelt Parkway.”
.

La Prensa strongly urges the city council members to vote “yes” for this resolution. It is a resolution long over due for both the Latino community and the community in general.

Chávez, as the Council knows, struggled many years to obtain fair wages, pension benefits, and medical coverage for farmworkers and their families.

U.S. Congresspersons Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) and Dennis Kucinich (OH-10) co-introduced a resolution this year honoring Chávez (La Prensa, March 30, 2005, can be viewed on line
here.

Chávez believed in peaceful means to achieve these goals, as did Martin Luther King, Jr., who has been appropriately honored by Council over the years via re-naming of a Toledo public school, bridge, and train terminal. Chavéz has yet to be honored in any such fashion.

The Buckeye Basin Greenbelt Parkway is an appropriate venue, with its adjacent Union Memorial Park, which commemorates Toledo’s Electric Auto-Lite strike of 1934. Chávez was an internationally renowned labor leader, having co-founded the United Farm Workers union. Vote “Yes” for this important resolution.
