Latino Career Day successful

Last Wednesday, the Franciscan Theatre and Conference Center of Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio was the venue for Latino Career Day, sponsored by the Toledo Public Schools and Lourdes College.

This highly successful event has become an annual event, according to José Luna, Coordinator of Bilingual Education and Related Programs of the TPS and Dr. Robert J. Turek, Vice President for Student Services of Lourdes College, with all of Toledo’s public schools participating except for Start, Scott, and Rogers.

Numerous Career Day workshops were conducted with participation by: José Limon (General Motors Portfolio Development Center), Michael A. Lair (Lair Learning Alliance), Martha Delgado (Professor of Social Work, University of Toledo), Rico Neller (La Prensa), Anna Ponce (Coordinator of Marketing, Buckeye CableSystem), Roman Arce, J.D. (Marshall & Melhorn, LLC), Lou Vásquez (Sgt., TPD), Ed Granados (Toledo Fire & Rescue Dept.), Al Flores (Spanish instructor, Libbey HS), Mary Morales (Math instructor, Waite HS), Karen Roadruck (Chair, Early Childhood, School of Education, Lourdes College), Al Longoria (Local Union 50), John Alderman (Acting Director, Information Technology/LAN Analyst, Lourdes College), Laurie Orzechowski (Director, Admin. Systems, Lourdes College), Alisa Smith (Help Desk Manager, Lourdes College), Greg Guzman (Director, Financial Aid, Lourdes College), Stephen Vásquez (Admissions Counselor, Lourdes College), and representatives from the College of Fine Arts, Ohio University (Norma J. Humphreys, Rosemarie Basile, Travis Gatling, Rubén Graziani, Alison Brown Sincoff, & Rudy Frias).

The several hundred high school students in attendance were allowed to select three seminars to participate in; the seminars were followed by lunch.

“Next year,” said Luna, “we hope to expand and have 100 per cent participation. We appreciate our volunteers and student involvement.”
