Dec. 21 deadline for Vicente Fox Beca applications at Oakland University, which has been supportive of cultural diversity
The Mexican Consulate for Michigan and Northern Ohio is based in Detroit, Michigan. It invites all high school and college students of Mexican citizenship to send the Consulate information regarding possible scholastic support with the Vicente Fox Scholarship, offered by Oakland University, Rochester MI.
According to Consul Antonio Meza Estrada, the scholarship was established during the 2004 visit to Michigan by Vicente Fox-Quesada, President of México.

At that June, 2004, visit, Oakland University’s president, Dr. Gary D. Russi, stated, “This scholarship reaffirms Oakland University’s continuing commitment to diversity, and has been established to honor President Fox and México’s rich culture and history. We are truly humbled that our guests are here with us today to share in this great news.”
At that welcoming, Dr. Russi announced that this tuition-differential scholarship was established “so students with Mexican citizenship would be eligible to enroll at Oakland University with the scholarship funds covering the difference between out-of-state tuition and residential tuition rates, starting in fall 2004.”
Sponsors of the scholarship include: the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund, MASCO Corporation, Collins & Aikman Corporation, Herman Miller Mexico S.A. de C.V., Delphi Corporation, Ford Motor Company, ArvinMeritor, Butzel Long, Valeo, Energy Conversion Devices-Uni-Solar Ovonic, and Excel Technical Services.

Oakland University also offers a study abroad opportunity in Morelia, México through its partnership with AHA International.
Students participating in this Migration Studies program attend classes at the Universidad Latina de America in Morelia. UNLA’s campus is situated on the outskirts of the city, where students enjoy well-maintained facilities including a student cafeteria, an Internet-connected library and expansive ecological walkways.
The university is a small, liberal arts school of roughly 1,500 students, allowing U.S. students the opportunity to interact, on a daily basis, with other Mexican students. In addition, Oakland University offers a linguistic outreach program in cooperation with the Hispanic Outreach Services of Pontiac (now a division of Catholic Social Services) to provide English language skills to Spanish-speaking residents in the Pontiac area.
