Santiago speaks at NLPOA gathering

City of Toledo prosecutor Lourdes Santiago was the speaker at last weekend’s gathering of the National Latino Peace Officer’s Association (NLPOA) in Toledo .

Santiago is a candidate for judge to the Toledo Municipal bench.

Officers from around the country were on hand, headed by Felipe Ortiz, its national president. Also present were Tom Gonzáles, Ohio Chapter president, and Jeff Sabo, Toledo Chapter president.

Santiago congratulated the NLPOA for its accomplishments and stated that she shared the organization’s core values and mission statement to “eliminate prejudice and discrimination in the criminal justice system, reduce community juvenile delinquency, and lessen citizen tension in predominately Latino communities.”

“I am a strong supporter of the police, law, and order, and will do my best to follow these core values of the NLPOA,” said Santiago .

Santiago, who “was an army brat” when growing up in countries such as Germany and Puerto Rico, moved to Toledo in 1974 and attended the University of Toledo College of Law. After graduating and practicing law for six years, she joined the city’s Law Department in 1983.

Ortiz thanked Santiago for her presentation, wished her well, and made her an honorary member of the Toledo Chapter. The NLPOA also endorsed her candidacy—her first endorsement after being endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party.
