Northwest Ohio parents unite following Youth Summit
By Ramón Pérez
Latino parents from the Toledo/Lucas County area began organizing following a parent's night program as part of the 3rd Annual Latino Youth Summit held recently at The University of Toledo. Following the summit, a Latino Issues Forum was held on May 23rd to start identifying issues and concerns most pressing to Latino families including: developing grassroots solutions and increasing parent involvement in upcoming meetings and door-knocking campaigns. The parents felt strongly about self-determination and that their efforts need to be driven and led by parents who have the right to define, create, and demand quality education for their children; increase under-employment of Latinos, homeownership, business opportunities, delivery of health-care, voter turnout, and other related concerns. The first door-knocking campaign will focus in the Old South-end of Toledo on Monday's June 6th & 13th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Please make plans to join us and "Despierta Latino." The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 20th at 7 p.m. at the Mayores Senior Center. All Latinos from the Toledo/Lucas County are needed at this meeting. For more information please call 419.261.0598 and ask for a parent organizer. Se habla español.
