Taylor Balderas explaining to Robert Torres, Joe Balderas, Sabina Seratos, Joe Rosales, Francisco Aguilar, and John Martínez why she wants to be endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party at last Saturday’s Latino Caucus.

Hispanic/Latino Caucus recommends Taylor Balderas

Toledo: The Hispanic/Latino Caucus of the Lucas County Democratic Party met last Saturday at Democratic headquarters and interviewed three Latinos interested in running for Toledo City Council, District 3, once Robert McCloskey is sworn in Jan. 3, 2006 as an At-Large seat after his Nov. 8th victory.

The Democratic Screening Committee meets on Dec. 7 to meet all interested parties. Names that have surfaced over the past several weeks of individuals interested in running for this office include:  Mary Ward (née Flores, City of Toledo employee), Francisco Aguilar (UT student), Taylor Balderas (BGSU graduate), Eric Wineland (attorney), Fred Kutz (planning consultant), Ernie Berry (independent candidate in Nov.), and Ben Krompak (UT student).

District 3 consists of  East Toledo and parts of the old South End.

The McCloskey District 3 vacancy will be filled by a vote of city council, whichcould happen on Jan. 3. Council often follows the recommendation of the Lucas County Democratic Party, but with the current makeup of council, it is hard to predict the outcome.

The Caucus membership, after hearing from Balderas, Ward, and Aguilar, voted to recommend to the Democratic Screening Committee, Taylor Balderas, whose father, Joe Balderas, elected to forego his council ambitions.

No Republican candidates have come forward as of yet.
