BP-Husky Refining Lab Technician

The Laboratory Technician role at the BP Toledo Refinery plays a major role in the maintaining a quality assurance laboratory that specializes in certifying products, intermediates and other refinery samples in the refinery Lab.

Key accountabilities :

• Ensures all analytical team personnel, equipment and software is consistently utilized with all BP, industry or other standards, methods and analytical practices.

• Responsible for instrument and chemical analysis of petroleum products, feed stocks, compressed gases, and waste water for product quality assurance, process optimization and environmental compliance purposes.

• Performs instrument and chemical analyses of petroleum products, compressed gases, and wastewater.

• Performs sampling activities of Fuel Products (Liquid and LPG) and other refinery streams.

• Drives company vehicles for transporting samples on public roads.

• Maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation.

• Works a rotating shift schedule with required overtime.

• Works alone and independently without supervision on a wide variety of tasks.

• Applies experience, training and technical knowledge.

• Understands and is compliant with all Control of Work (CoW) and Process Safety policies and procedures.

Essential Education : Required: Associate’s degree in Technical field Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry

Essential experience and job requirements :

Required: Minimum 5 years of laboratory experience including the interpretation, development, and application of analytical standards. Preferred: Experience in a petrochemical facility.

Required Skills/Competencies:

• Understanding of distillation and chemical reaction mechanisms is required.

• Ability to accurately perform precision sampling and testing, ability to work in teams.

• Basic understanding of the manufacturing process including economics, commercial awareness, identification of optimization opportunities, and process and control technology in their area.

• Ability to multitask by proficient synthesis of all relationships between the processes.

• Analyzing problems/troubleshooting and problem solving: Systematically determine the root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take.

• Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process.

• Maintain regulatory compliance while operating the process. This involves the complete understanding of environmental and safety limits.

• Ability to solve job-related problems by making mathematical calculations using a hand calculator or by hand.

• The ability to analyze lab data and understand process variable relationships.

• Willingness to perform physically active job tasks, some of which involve year-round outdoor work in all types of weather.

• Able to participate in assessment testing and a pre-employment screening that may take several weeks to complete.

• The ability to successfully pass a physical abilities demonstration, including the ability to climb tanks to extended heights and flights of stairs.

• Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

• Possess a valid driver’s license at time of employment.

• Must be able to pass physical abilities testing

• Willingness to work 12 - 16 hour rotating shifts that may include weekends, holidays and overtime.
