Michigan renters facing eviction can still find help

Renters across Michigan experiencing pandemic-related financial hardships may be wondering where to turn or how to avoid being evicted since the Eviction Diversion Program (EDP) ended last year.

The good news is a new rental assistance program is currently being developed, and as we wait for that program to be finalized, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has other rental assistance options that Michigan residents can immediately take advantage of today.

·         Michigan 2-1-1. This free service helps those in need connect with community resources and organizations offering health and human services assistance, including eviction prevention.

·         The Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) Program. The ESG program provides funding to community organizations to help those experiencing homelessness.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s 2-1-1 team serves the counties of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, Monroe and Washtenaw. Residents in these areas can connect with Michigan 2-1-1 by calling 211 or 1-800-552-1183.

Local Housing Assessment and Resource Agencies (HARAs) across Michigan can also help residents see if the ESG program is right for them. HARAs in Southeastern Michigan are immediately available to help renters having trouble paying rent:
