Longtime SAO Officer
Frances Martínez Passes Away

2020 continues to be a tough year for losing long-time Latino
leaders in the local community.
Eighty-six-year-young Frances Martínez, of Holland, Ohio,
passed away October 4, 2020. She was a founding member of the
Spanish American Organization (SAO),
as well as a long-time officer in the organization, holding a
number of posts since its founding.
Ms. Martínez first served as SAO secretary for three years, then
as its treasurer for a decade, doing the organization’s taxes.
She served the past decade as a board trustee for the nonprofit.
Ms. Martínez was also an active member of Latins United
for many years.
Ms. Martinez was born in Kyle, TX on June 25, 1934 to Trinidad
and Francisca (née Maldonado) Rodríguez. She graduated from
Waite HS in 1953 and was employed at Toledo Towel and Seagate
Graphics. Her greatest joy was family and she enjoyed making
many quilts for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews,
and extended family and friends.
She is survived by her
daughters, Christine Martínez, Diana Martínez, and Carol (Rob)
Martínez Nolan., along with grandchildren Marissa, Richard,
Corina, Dominic, Mario, Libio, and eleven great-grandchildren
who lovingly called her GiGi; also, siblings Jesse Rodríguez,
Fred (Dora) Rodríguez, Carmen (Rick) Barbosa, and Simon
(Virginia) Rodríguez. Ms. Martínez was preceded in death by her
parents and granddaughter Capucine Martínez.
A visitation was held October 8
at Coyle Funeral Home, with a funeral mass the following day at
Our Lady of Lourdes Church. A burial service immediately
followed at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be
