Mentors in Toledo Schools Literacy Program is reviving Pen Pal Letter Writing to Help Elementary School Students Practice Reading and Writing at Home

TOLEDO, April 21 2020: Partners in Education is announcing a new initiative to bring our mentor/tutors and their kindergarten through grade 3 students back together while schools are out of session due to COVID-19 – pen pals.

“We’re reviving the lost art of letter writing—real letter writing, in ink (and maybe crayon) and mailed through the US Postal Service to maintain mentor/mentee relationships and encourage the practice of reading and writing at home,” says Michelle Klinger, Partners in Education’s Executive Director. “Students had been receiving extra literacy help from mentor/tutors four days a week at school and we were looking for a really personal way to engage both our volunteers and our students who don’t all have access to technology. So, we thought…why not pen pals?”

Our Mentors in Toledo Schools site coordinators are connecting our volunteer mentor/tutors with their students to receive personal letters of encouragement to keep up their studies and practice reading and writing at home. And students are encouraged to write back. The pen pal program will continue throughout the spring to bring sunshine into the lives of our volunteers, the majority of whom are retired educators and businesspeople, and our young learners at the same time.

Formerly part of the Ohio Reads program, Mentors in Toledo Schools provides one-to-one literacy tutoring to Toledo Public School students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 at DeVeaux, Garfield, Larchmont, Marshall, McKinley, McTigue, Old Orchard, Sherman, Longfellow and Whittier schools. The program’s success depends on a dedicated volunteer force who have a passion for mentoring young students and helping them gain skills and confidence in reading and writing.
