Paul Vachon: Important moments in Detroit’s history

DETROIT, March 12, 2020: With spring around the corner, Paul Vachon, author of Detroit: An Illustrated Timeline, shares a few formative moments that we will commemorate in the coming months. Below are some of these historic events:

  • March 17, 1968—Focus:HOPE was established in the wake of the 1967 insurrection as one of several efforts to heal a broken city and combat hunger, racism, and economic inequality. Today, Focus:HOPE continues its vital work.
  • April 8, 1956—End of Detroit Streetcar Service.
  • April 11, 1936—Detroit Red Wings win Stanley Cup to cement Detroit’s place as the “City of Champions!”
  • April 11, 2000—Comerica Park opens after a long debate on the replacement for the legendary Tiger Stadium. The players didn’t disappoint and led the team to a 5-2 Opening Day victory over the Seattle Mariners.
  • April 12, 1997—Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History dedicated. Today, The Wright stands as one of the premier institutions celebrating African American history in the United States.
  • June 23, 1963—Martin Luther King Jr. leads the Walk to Freedom down Woodward Avenue. Following the event, a massive rally took place at Cobo Arena, where King presented an early version of his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech.

A lifelong resident of the Detroit area, Paul Vachon is an author, freelance writer, and public speaker. He possesses a strong interest in Detroit history and has written four previous books devoted to the subject. He’s also written guidebooks on Michigan travel.

Paul is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. In his spare time, Paul enjoys traveling and nature photography. He also thinks having a map of the state on the back of his left hand is pretty cool.
