Annual “Automotive Cup” to benefit Matrix Theatre and Clark Park

DETROIT, January 9, 2020: The Ford Motor Company and General Motors female employee hockey teams will return to the ice to face off for charity on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at 6:30pm at Clark Park’s regulation-sized outdoor hockey rink located at 1130 Clark Avenue in the heart of southwest Detroit

The 3rd Annual GM vs. Ford Automotive Cup will feature a game with three 15-minute periods, an exhibition by the Sharks, Clark Park’s girls’ team, concessions donated by Green Dot Stables, the wildly popular Chuck-a-Puck, and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit Clark Park Coalition and Matrix Theatre Company, two nonprofits located in southwest Detroit.

“The team that wins the game takes home the trophy and bragging rights for the year, but the team that raises the most cash for the two charities will get naming rights for the 2021 game,” said Megan Buckley-Ball, Matrix Artistic Director and co-founder of the event. “It’s easy. Prior to game day, go to matrixtheatre.org, click the Donate button and help the team of your choice, Team Ford or Team GM, raise the most money. Game attendees will have the opportunity to attribute their admission and concessions donations to the team of their choice as well.”

Prior to game time, players from both teams will meet with the Clark Park Girls’ team to talk about how playing hockey has positively impacted their lives. “They’ll answer questions, share lessons they’ve learned by playing the game, and how they have applied it to their lives, both personally and professionally,” said Birdie Buckley-Ball, GM employee and co-creator of the Automotive Cup.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with another southwest Detroit nonprofit committed to working with youth and providing a safe space for them to gain confidence and grow into healthy young adults,” said Clark Park Coalition Executive Director Anthony Benavides. “It’s always great fun to see the girls out there giving it their all.”

“This is a great partnership,” said Ball. “Hockey and theatre complement each other and are great tools that teach collaboration and teamwork and inspire youth to be the best at what they do. We’re all looking forward to a great day on the ice for a good cause.”

A $5 donation at the gate is suggested. For further information, or to donate online, visit www.matrixtheatre.org.  To donate by check, make it payable to Matrix Theatre Company and mail to 2730 Bagley, Detroit, Michigan 48216, Attention:  Automotive Cup.
