Celeb Review: Eric Benét at The Tangier Restaurant and Cabernet

By Tyrrea Byrd for La Prensa

November 30, 2019: Thankful?  That’s what the Akron, Ohio area and surrounding community residence were on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, was the holiday that reminded us of how thankful we were by bringing family and friends together, followed by Black Friday which ushered in that retail therapy that created the adrenaline rush for holiday shoppers. However, the stage was set as couples and friends stood in a long line for the second show at The Tangier, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Eric Benét

The four-time Grammy nominee Eric Benét entered stage left and provided his fans with about an hour of his favorite hits, including, “Spend My Life with You” (featuring Tamia on the original soundtrack), which Benét said was the song that skyrocketed his career.  While there were lots of fans present, Eric noticed a special friend in the audience, PJ, formerly with Warner Brothers, an area native that was also helpful in this rise to the top of the charts.

Benét opened the show with, “Love don’t love me”; followed by, “You, Me and He,” a remake from Mtume and a great call and response selection noted by audience participation.  “Chocolate legs” got the women on their feet and Benét interacted with them by taking selfies.  The evening could not go on without, “Femininity,” “I Got News for You,” “Love of My Own,” “Pretty Baby,” and “Spiritual Thang.”

Benét included a remake of his favorite artist, The Artist [formerly known as Prince]: “Why Don’t You Call Me Anymore.”

As the evening came to a close, Benét re-entered the stage with an —“Georgie Porgie,” which got the entire audience on their feet as they continued to share their gratitude to The Tangier Restaurant and Cabaret for providing such great entertainers.

The Tangier is Akron’s leading event and entertainment center, nestled in the heart of Akron,  that has also hosted many banquets, weddings and social events for three generations.
