Noche de Velitas, Dec. 7
Once the calendar turns to December, Christmas traditions take
center stage. Voces Latinas, the Sofia Quintero Art
and Cultural Center (SQACC), and Inspire Multi-Media
Solutions are joining forces to present Noche de Velitas
(Night of the Candles) on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019.
According to tradition in Colombia, loved ones and strangers alike
gather to light candles, signifying their hopes, dreams, and
wishes for the upcoming year. While the tradition began as a
religious holiday, the event has evolved to become a Colombian
cultural event that signifies love, family, and friendship. As
Noche de Velitas celebrates the Immaculate Conception of
Mary, a dinner and dance at SQACC, 1225 Broadway, that evening
also will open the Christmas season.
Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 at the door. The Dec. 7 evening
event will feature a Colombian Christmas dinner and
entertainment from Sammy Deleon and his Salsa Band. There also
will be a DJ and a cash bar.
Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NOHCC) will co-host a holiday
open house Tuesday, Dec. 10, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Toledo-Lucas
County Port Authority building, 720 Water St., near downtown
Toledo. The open house is being co-hosted by Glass City Radio,
which owns oldies and variety hits station WIMX-FM Mix 95.7 and
hip-hop R and B station HOT 97.3 Light appetizers and beverages
will be provided. Radio station tours will be conducted, along
with a meet-and-greet of on-air staff.
