City of Toledo recognizes HHM and award recipients

Sept. 17, 2019: The Ohio Latino Affairs Commission, The City of Toledo, La Prensa Newspaper, and Nuestra Gente Radio held a 3:00 p.m. press conference on the first floor of One Government Center in Toledo to kick-off the start of Hispanic Heritage Month [HHM], which included the presentation of pa city resolution to the 2019 State of Ohio Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan (DHO) Awardees.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and City Councilman Gary Johnson made the presentations along with comments by Dr. Gregory A. Guzmán.

In fulfillment of the mandate to “secure appropriate recognition of the accomplishments of the Hispanic/Latino people to the State of Ohio” (Ohio Revised Code § 121.32(B)), the 11-Member Ohio Latino Affairs Commission, with Dr. Gregory A. Guzmán serving as NW Ohio Commissioner, have selected Northwest Ohio’s recipients as:

• José Luna has been selected to receive the 2019 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan (DHO) Award. Mr. Luna serves as the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for the Toledo Public School System, is a published author of children’s books, a musician, and one of our area’s strongest education advocates.

Ezequiel Villa has been selected to receive the 2019 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan (DHO) Military Service Award. Mr. Villa is not only a highly decorated Veteran of the Korean War, owner of the longest standing Mexican business in Toledo – “El Tipico” Mexican restaurant, but also the youngest man on record to ever serve in the United States Air Force at the age of 14.

Nueva Esperanza Community Credit Union has been selected to receive the 2019 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan (DHO) Nuestra Familia Award. Nueva Esperanza, with Sue Cuevas serving as CEO & president, is the first Latino-focused credit union in the State of Ohio and, according to Ms. Cuevas, only the 3rd in the Nation. It is a member-owned financial institution offering savings and loans. It was chartered in 2010 with less than 10-members. Today, they have over $2 million in assets with over 500-members.
