Toledo - Coburg, Germany Sister Cities agreement signing

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Toledo City Council President Matt Cherry, and Coburg, Germany Bürgermeisterin (Vice Mayor) Frau Dr. Birgit Weber signed a new sister cities agreement between the two cities during a ceremony on the 22nd floor of One Government Center at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.

Accompanying Coburg Vice Mayor Weber was Jan Bierweiler, head assistant master of the Casimirianum Gymnasium (high school); Siegmar Schnabel, head business leader of industry and business for the Coburg Chamber of Commerce; Maria Krumm, head of Coburg’s Sister City organization; Horst Graf, owner of a German marketing firm; Jürgen Heeb, twinning officer and Coburg city council member; Rainer Kalwait, professor of applied sciences and arts at Coburg University, and Stefan Horn, business leader of the Economic Assistance Co./ Society of the City of Coburg.

Through the efforts of James Hartung, Toledo Sister Cities International board president, Toledo and Coburg first began exploring the feasibility of a sister cities agreement and engaging in cultural exchange in 2016. The Coburg city council unanimously voted in favor of entering into a twinning agreement with the city of Toledo on Sept. 29, 2017. The Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra performed in Coburg as the first Toledo Sister Cities delegation in June, 2018.

“It is essential, in today’s world, that we celebrate our cultural differences and seek to learn from our shared experiences,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said. “Toledo and Coburg are strengthening our economic, educational, and cultural ties, and we are working together to support the growth and well-being of both communities.”
