Club Taino Puertorriqueño’s Constitution Day

TOLEDO: For the 23rd year, Club Taino Puertorriqueño celebrated Puerto Rico’s Constitution Day. It was held this year on July 28, 2019 at Swan Creek Metropark in Toledo.

According to the Club’s María González, the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Constitución del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico) is the controlling government document of Puerto Rico, which is part of the Commonwealth of the United States. Its constitution was ratified on July 25, 1952. All Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.

Amy Rivera and Leilani Pérez were each the recipients of $500 in scholarship funds. Amy plans on attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. She is a graduate from the Toledo School of the Arts. Leilani, who graduated from TPS’ Bowsher HS, will be attending the University of Toledo, with a focus on nursing.  The Latinas were also recognized at this year's Latino Scholarship Day with the Toledo Mud Hens.

At the picnic, Luis O. Moctezuma gave a brief speech about the importance of Puerto Rico and what needs to be done since the tragic devastation of the island by several hurricanes and subsequent political turmoil. Luis was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico but now resides in the Toledo area.

And, of course, there was plenty of popular foods from the island including: arroz con gandules, pollo guisado, pasteles, y más.
