‘Mom’s House’ hosts graduation ceremonies
TOLEDO: On May 15, 2019, Mom’s House hosted its 2019
graduation ceremony at The Summit Event Center, honoring nine
graduates from local high schools and colleges and four
pre-school graduates into kindergarten.
Lucas County continues to rank high in the area of teenage
pregnancy. Sixty percent of those young parents will drop out of
school and continue cycles of poverty and at-risk behaviors.
Also, alarming is the national subsequent or repeat pregnancy
rate. Almost a quarter of teen mothers have a second pregnancy
before the age of twenty. At Mom’s House, the repeat
pregnancy rate is just under 3%.
With these statistics, it is crucial that local community
organizations like Mom’s House provide effective programs
that aid in breaking the cycle of poverty and welfare. Studies
show that programs that motivate youth to achieve higher levels
of education as well as provide instruction on relationships and
sexual attitudes, a stable environment and mentoring
opportunities, work in preventing cycles and repeat pregnancies.
“We provide exceptional Early Childhood Education for the
children while the mothers attend school, however we feel the
heart of our program lies within additional services that
include tutoring, counseling, parenting classes, mentoring,
financial, legal services, interviewing procedures, and much
more.” says Christina Rodríguez, Executive Director.
“Today we celebrate the moments when dreams become reality for
our young families, the beginning of a bright future” she adds.
