Reported Events in the Toledo area: Spring “Save-the-Dates”

Feb. 20, 2019: A tough winter has led to near-hibernation for
many Latino families and organizations, but the spring social
calendar in metro Toledo will warm up hearts and minds with
plenty to do and see, while helping many good causes in the
Corazón de México Ballet Folklorico
The 46th annual
University of Toledo Latino Student Union (LSU) scholarship baile is the
first event on the spring social calendar, to be held
Saturday, March 16, 2019, 7 to 11:30 p.m., at the UT
student union. “Una Noche Bajo de Las Estrellas” will
feature musical performances by Izaya Burciaga and
Motivo. Advance tickets are $5 for students and $10 for
adults. Admission will be $15 per person at the door. Tickets

The sixth annual Thank You for Believing benefit dinner
and showcase takes place Saturday, April 6, 2019,
6 to 9 p.m., at The Believe Center, 1 Aurora González Dr.
El Corazón de México Ballet Folklorico is hosting the
event, which features a Mexican/Tex-Mex dinner and performance
by the youth dance troupe. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at
the door and can be obtained by calling 419.283.1628.
The Sofia Quintero Art and
Cultural Center (SQACC)
will hold its 12th annual Entre Amigos celebrity
waitstaff dinner on Friday, April 12, 2019, at the
center, 1225 Broadway. The evening will feature traditional
Latino cuisine, a silent auction, a stroll through Nana’s
Garden featuring outdoor art displays and an art exhibition,
as well as raffles. Proceeds go to youth classes, community
gardens, and cultural cooking courses. Tickets are $40 for
adults. $35 for seniors, $10 for kids 11 and under. Adult
tickets will be $45 at the door. Tickets can be purchased by
The spring Spanish American Organization scholarship
fundraiser dinner is scheduled Monday, April 15, 2019,
5:30 p.m., at Poco Loco, 1809 Adams St. There also will
be a silent auction and raffles that evening. Tickets are $25 in
advance by calling 419.290.3082. Tickets also will be
available at the door.
Some deadlines are fast approaching for the University of
Toledo’s annual Latino Youth Summit (LYS), set for Tuesday
and Wednesday, May 14 and 15, 2019 at the UT student
union. The LYS registration deadline is Monday, April 1.
UT is expecting about 500 middle and high school students from
across the region to attend the summit, which annually provides
college planning and career path
information through sessions about pre-high school and
pre-college coursework and information about various
occupational fields. Emphasis is placed on the importance of
skills in science, math and technology in the current job
market. The summit also includes hands-on activities in nursing
and pharmacy, engineering, health professions, health and
wellness, and real-world personal finances. The students also
are given a mini-preview of the UT campus. Adult and college-age
volunteers are being sought to help with the summit.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Latino high school seniors who plan to attend UT
m the fall are facing a Feb. 28, 2019 deadline to apply for a
President’s Summit Award scholarship, which provides $2,000
and first-year housing, for a total of $10,000 in aid. Students
must attend the summit and maintain a 3.0 GPA to be eligible.
There are ten such scholarships available.
