Department of Art Summer Lecture Series on ‘Aesthetics of Light’
The 2008 Summer Art Session Lecture Series will present the
topic of LIGHT from various points of view—from the perspective
of the visual arts to the performing arts. The Summer Lecture
Series offers a wealth of insightful perspectives on the
aesthetics of light and accompanies the exploration of light in
many of the summer art courses.
For five Wednesdays at noon during May, June, and July,
students, faculty, and the general public have the opportunity
to expand their awareness of the cultural, historical, and
perceptual aspects of light. The University of Toledo faculty
presenters come together from different disciplines including
art history, new media art, theatre, and physics and astronomy.
They will speak on topics as varied as: qualities of light in
ancient Egypt; the nature of perception; the symbolism of light
in the avant-garde theatre; light in contemporary installation
art; and experimental forms of writing using light.
The Series plus the Summer Session Classes will inspire new ways
of thinking and looking at light and art. The schedule of
lecture times follows:
May 21, 2008: Ordering the Cosmos: Light and Dark in Ancient
Egypt; presented by Richard Putney, Professor of Art
History;
May 28: Finding the Absolute in a Relative World;
presented by Lawrence Anderson-Huang, Professor of Physics and
Astronomy;
June 25: The Symbolism of Light in Turn-of-the-Century
Avant-Garde Theatre; presented by Edmund Lingan, Assistant
Professor of Theatre;
July 2: Contemporary Installation Art & Light; presented
by Rajorshi Ghosh, Visiting Assistant Professor, Art;
July 9: Light Writing: the Light and Language of Gyorgy Kepes;
