students graduate from UT
Health, Science enhancement program
University
of Toledo
College of Medicine alum Dr. Kevin Douglas highlighted careers
in the health sciences as the featured speaker for 34 area high
school students graduating from the
Toledo Starz
Program on May 20, 2008, in the Mulford Library Café on the
Health Science Campus.
Douglas is currently employed as medical liaison for UBC Pharma,
Inc. in Indianapolis.
“This is the time to celebrate these students’ commitment to the
program and their commitment to preparing themselves
academically for future career endeavors,” said Sandra
Rivers-Gill, manager of diversity programs for the office of
institutional diversity. “It is also a time to show our
appreciation to faculty, staff and students who have made
valuable contributions to the program during the year.”
Additionally, a cappella group, Vocal Remedy, comprised of UT
College of Medicine students, sang.
Toledo
Starz, launched in fall 2006, is an after-school
enrichment program running between September and May for all
students, grades 9-12 that is particularly geared toward
underrepresented populations and designed to augment the
experiences of those motivated toward health science careers.
High schools represented this year included Bowsher, Libbey,
Rogers, Scott, Toledo Early
College, Toledo School for the Arts, Maumee, Notre Dame,
St. John’s Jesuit and
Springfield. The program is a
University of Toledo diversity initiative administered by the
Office of Institutional Diversity through the support of the
College of Medicine.
